BRIELLE NORRIS

As a graphic designer I strive for viewers to examine content that I have organized to make the most sense in its context. I work mainly in digital formats to display information and ideas in ways that are easy to digest, while maintaining intrigue and curiosity. My work explores innovative and rhythmic organization, as you will see in my redesign of an Amtrak Train Schedule (2020) . I take the material that I have been given and rework it into formats that employ a sense of ease and understanding. I am inspired by bold colors, fun typography and a clean aesthetic. A rhythm is given to my designs through these ideas, as well as my use of grid structures and formats that break the basic grid for emphasis.

The skills that I most utilize in my designs are attention to detail, cohesive structures, and creative thinking. Efficiency in the Adobe Suite allows me to create logos, brochures, posters, and other various forms of art that express my passion and artistic vision. Collaged Typography (2020) embodies my inspirations through my own vibrant color palette, a consistent typography style, and a neat layout. To bring this work out of my imagination and into existence, I cut out patterns from an Architectural Digest magazine, used them to put together a collage, and then scanned it to create digital letterforms. Projects such as these are what I thrive for; combined techniques to produce fresh ideas, and new perspectives.

I am passionate about combining physical and digital elements to construct original designs that can’t be done with just a computer. I find this to be not only enjoyable, but also a challenge that keeps me learning new skills while simultaneously strengthening my creativity. In the winter semester of 2021, I am building a collection of mixed media typography. This is a perfect example of combining photography, sculpture, painting, and digital illustration to discover new styles of type that can be applied to various formats such as cookbooks and posters. Another work where mixed media techniques are utilized is my series of book cover redesigns. I chose to redesign the covers of three Junie B. Jone’s books because designing for a young audience was something that I had no previous experience with. I began by illustrating my images with pen and paper. Once these drawings ultimately fulfilled my initial vision, I scanned them and digitally edited them to mesh with the rest of my design.

Overall, I intend for my work to display originality. I continue to search for new techniques to implement into my designs in effort to expand my ever-evolving palette.
